Masik will be performing a very short tribute set for Hal McGee at the very beginning of the night. I've spent enough time listening to Hal's expansive array of music, clips & samples to make s full set, but SOO many awesome performers after us! Hal, expect samples you didnt even know existed!

I cant wait for this and am honored to be playing a legend's birthday party!
Thanks for the slot & the ongoing inspiration you provide....

For the Friday night show here in Gainesville, one of the performers, Babushka, needs to borrow a keyboard from someone, because she cannot bring hers on the airplane from Denver. She is used to playing Casio CZ1000. In any case it needs to be a polyphonic Casio-style keyboard with preset instrument sounds with full-size keys.

Also, Al Margolis (If, Bwana) would like to boorow a violin for the show. He told me that it doesn't have to be a good violin - just a violin. I don't think that Al is going to do anything destructive to the violin he uses _ althought it might entail scraping on the strings and tapping on the body and such like. So please, don't let us borrow your super expensive violin if you are going to stand there and cringe as Al drags the bow noisily across the strings... or whatever else he may or may not do.

Does somebody out there in the ESS community have these items for us to borrow?

Unfortunately, it looks like Dave Fuglewicz will not be able to make it to my birthday shows.

My brother Mark, who is a way talented percussionist, and who played on some of my tapes in the 80s (and most of Debbie Jaffe's Master/Slave Relationship albums from the mid 80s) will be playing at the Friday night show!

Here's the collab album we did in 86:

Hal, you should talk to Frog... he may have these items.

Is he "legendary" too? Older or younger?

Chris, He is not quite as "legendary" as me, no. But who is? He is younger, at the ripe old age of 46.

please contribute to Hal 50th birthday special web page

Postby ess » Friday January 11, 2008 12:15 pm

Hal McGee posted this bulletin on myspace:

please contribute to Hal 50th birthday special web page

I have created a special page on my web site especially for documentation of the 50th Birthday shows and the events surrounding them. I will add on materials bit by bit, before, during and after the event as a kind of live journal of this special group of events. There is not much on the page right now, just the show posters and a few other items, but I will continue to add more stuff. Please bookmark this page:

http://halmcgee.com/hal50thbirthdaymania.html

Not only will I present mp3s of the performances from the two shows, but also your photos, audio recordings, and artifacts from the entire six-day period. The page is going to be about much more than just the performances at the shows themselves. It will be like a big collage of various sorts of things. So, please send stuff to me. Any and all of you can send materials. Examples of the kinds of things I am looking for include: selections and fragments from cassette and microcassette "field recordings" from before, during, after, and in-between the shows - conversations, street sounds, performance warmup sounds, travel sounds, airport sounds, etc; video clips and links; ticket stubs and store receipts and the like; written and audio diary entries and other communication pertaining to the events, such as selections from e-mails, reviews, adverts, blurbs, etc.; photos not only of the performances, but the parties, meals, hanging out, traveling, venues, odd "found" photo subjects, etc.; artwork, paintings, and drawingsweird little objects that you find, ETC ETC ETC. Just whatever. Use your imagination and anything goes.

I will be documenting the six day period from Thursday, January 17, 2008 through Tuesday, January 22nd on Hi8 videotape, cassette, microcassette, disposable cameras, CDRs, emails, etc.

Spread the word that anyone who comes to the shows can contribute to this page, or indeed anyone else who has anything to say about the shows and events!

Your buddy,
Hal

Little Fyodor and Babushka

Postby hal mcgee » Friday January 11, 2008 5:33 pm

I have been in contact with Little Fyodor (David Lichtenverg) since 1984, when he was a member, along with Evan Cantor and Ed Fowler, of the Boulder, Colorado weirdo rock ensemble and collective Wall Of Genius. Walls Of Genius was one of my favorite bands from that era, and I still have original cassette copies of their releases Before ...and After, Ludovico Treatment, and The Mysterious Case Of Pussy Lust, as well as two compilations that they released on their label, Madness Lives, and Son Of Madness. In 1985 Little Fyodor released his first solo tape Slither Sloth featuring the monster hit "Ugly Girl". Be sure to visit Little Fyodor's web site as well as the Little Fyodor & Babushka site and his personal page on MySpace to listen to music he has done with the lovely Babushka and by himself, and there are some really cool performance videos to check out too. In fact, here is a video by Little Fyodor & Babushka - Gainesville, are you ready?

Huh? I already told you I don't have a cane any more. My buddy Celino took it.

Hey guys... I have two folding tables Lenny gave me if you need to borrow them for this show. You'll have to pick them up today or tomorrow. Let me know.

I'll comment on the show later, but in the meantime I have uploaded footage I shot of Little Fyodor & Babushka:

"You Give Me Hard-On (live @ tim & terry's on january 18, 2008)"

Image

Please note that these have been uploaded to Revver.com. If you attempt to embed their video player, myspace will block it and it will not work. In fact, if you even type in the word, "Revver.com", it will block that too. Every other site should work without problem. If you wish to direct folks to the videos, embed this image into your message:

I'll have pictures from Tim & Terrys, Transistions, & K. Paul's up soon.
It may take me a while cause I think there are a lot of photos to go through.

This weekend was fucking wonderful. Thank you very much, Hal, for including us in your birthday celebrations! I had a great time @ Tim & Terry's...however, extended conversations(The Story of Doc Slotch's Head, lol) led me to miss about half the performances, which I only realized after the show was over. Brunch w/ Hal the next day was really fun as well, and I made up for missing sets by going down to Tampa to catch them all again...Transition's & K.Paul's was one of the most fun nights I've had in a very long while. Write up & pictures of all of it to come. Thanks again Hal!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the shows! Both went off very well and I think Hal and the out of towners (and in towners, for that matter) were pretty happy about the whole experience. Little Fyodor & Babushka were talking about making this a yearly event, an idea which was received with great enthusiasm by the others as well. Hopefully these future events will happen!

While everyone delivered stellar performances it was stated that Little Fyodor & Babushka were the stars of the shows (along with the birthday boy himself), and that seems accurate. They played some different songs for the Tampa show.

The Tampa show also had different collaboration combinations, which kept things fresh, different, and exciting. Hal played in most of them... what a warrior!

Projexorcism joined the Tampa show as well, opening with tasteful synth additions from Hal. It was a total thrill to see them with a large projection space! Phenomenal set with images/audio themed on advertising and consumerism.

More thoughts later. Lots of photos and audio and video to follow. all of which Hal plans to put on his special birthday webpage he created: http://halmcgee.com/hal50thbirthdaymania.html

If you have something from this weekend that should be included (photos, audio fragments, video) you should send it to him!
