Action Research 39:

aaronzarzutzki -- another home state visitation from our favorite electronic wunderkind. Aaron has been very active in the Chicago improv scene since moving there for school. This will be his first solo electronics set in over two years.
Weak Sisters -- noise electronics from Colorado
Skeleton Warrior -- longtime Florida splatter noise group had people dancing the last time they played Gainesville. From Sarasota, mostly.
Globular -- member of NASA and Midnite Cobra. Not this dude. From Sarasota.
Deep Trench -- the waveforms that ate the dark abyss
Frog -- blessed wonder

This should be a lot of fun! I am looking forward to seeing all of you here in Gainesville, plus we will have some (three or more) out of town guests who are coming here just for the show! One of these guests recently informed me and us in song form that "God put Hal McGee on Earth to f*ck with us all". That might be putting it a wee bit tad strongly, but I do indeed have stipulations. Perhaps we will be treated to an impromptu performance of the Chris Miller Fan Club Band around the Firepit? I will Gmail Chris about it and ask him if he knows anything about it since a voice mail placed now will be answered by him two or three days after the show.

Hey, so are we still doing that betting pool on whether or not aaron zarzutzki will actually show up? $5 says he will this time...

What a great turnout! I'm really pleased with how this night went, overall. Thanks a million to Hal, Loren and John David for working the door! It would have been impossible to have done that myself, and Hal was frequently needed elsewhere, too (like when he performed!). The willingness to pitch in when asked means a lot to me and makes these shows work where otherwise they would just be a mess. I couldn't do these shows without everyone's help. Thanks especially to Chris Miller for running around and being the videographer/lighting specialist/stage manager/king of miscellaneous tasks/supplier of tables & fans & lights & electrical gear. As always, he put in so much of the work last night that made it a successful event.

A big thanks to Hal for contributing bottled water to be passed out for free! People really appreciated this. The temperature was much better than I had feared it would be, but it was still a bit warm.

Thanks to Wendy & Celino for allowing us free reign of the Story House for the night! I appreciate the willingness to host the event and the trust placed in us. They have a lot of other things on their minds right now and it was nice that they let us do a show in the midst of everything else.

Thanks to everyone who came out, from near and far. Tampa and Orlando represented! Gainesville represented! Thanks for showing up early and rolling with the lag time during some extensive equipment change-overs.

And, of course, thanks to everyone who played. Stellar sets all through the night... especially Skeleton Warrior! I've seen them do dancier material before but this was really top notch synth action! Memorable songs and hooks and some snappy moves.

Thanks to Monik & Andrew for getting me food after the show!

Wow, what a solid solid show last night!

Frog's intro was beautiful. Deep Trench was fantastic... those who missed it, missed it! aaron zarzutzki was so on top of his performance, with a nice balance of distorted buzzings and minimalist quietness. Globular was good, although I missed a bunch of their set due to taking-a-shower-dilly-dallying-indecisiveness. Skeleton Warrior was way way better than I had remembered... synth wave! I spent a good portion of their set showering my sweaty self down, but made sure to dance at the beginning and end. Wow.

I got to see bits of Dusty Twang & Quantum Singularity in between the early night's set-up, but not as much as I had wanted. I met Alien Overmind, who I actually had met before but didn't know that's who he was. Weak Sisters... weak excuse.

Thanks to Dave for the kick. No thanks for that crappy watermelon malt liquor. Thanks to Jesi and Andrew for sharing their drinkies. Thanks to Wendy and Celino for the (final) use of sToRy hoUsE (RIP). What a great turnout... Andrew's anticipation was right on the mark!

What a great beginning of the live electronic/experimental music weekend! Now onto the next one...

Fun show ^_^

Watching the door wasn't all that bad ^_^

Every time I see a compelling dancy synthy band I feel inspired to start my own. I've been chipping away at finding a practice space, so maybe one of these days I'll have a place where I can feel comfortable getting loud and getting singy.

I stumbled across a review of this show here: http://wirewater.wordpress.com/2009/07/03/totally-globular/

Gainesville, Abandoned Church Building

This was my first Action Research show experience, and needless to say it turned out really great. I don’t have any videos to post related to this show, but I was really stoked to finally see the mad scientist Hal McGee play alongside bandmates Ironing and No Limit Cycle in a harsh electronic project called Deep Trench. The name totally fits, as I felt I was being sucked deeper and deeper into a collapsing environment of clashing, pulsing waves. Frog put on a beautiful, enlightening accapella performance, and this was the first night that we met paths with Skeleton Warrior, who closed out the night with Dr. Frankenstein’s mind controlled dance beats. G-ville still has a breathing electronic/experimental scene.

What's this (bolded text) about?

Alright, so here’s the tour post I promised myself about. Here’s a quick recap of the roadtrip:

Bands that toured: Globular (my buddies Andy and Fuji, blending space with science)
Aaron Zarzutzki (particle processing)
Skeleton Warrior (electronic gang street warfare)

Bands that didn’t tour: Weak Sisters (too angry to tour?)
Michael Jackson

Destinations: Jacksonville, Gainesville, Orlando, Miami, Tampa

I know they called during the night of the show to say they hadn't left St. Augustine yet...

I don't know.

I know they called during the night of the show to say they hadn't left St. Augustine yet...

He called about a half an hour into their drive to ask if he could still come and play even though they had left so late. I thought the show would be over by the time they got there, so I advised them not to come.
